Antigua is known for its colorful religious celebrations during the Semana Santa, or Holy Week, leading up to Easter. Visitors can experience costumed processions, religious reenactments and brilliant “alfombra” carpets throughout Antigua’s streets. To create the alfombras, sand or sawdust is strewn on cobblestones, dyed different colors, then interwoven with bright flowers, plants and pine needles, resulting in incredible, photo-worthy designs.
